More Than the Pretty Lights

Before having find the picture above I honestly had so much wasted time looking at the different pictures of lights on Google images. Sounds funny right? But admit it, you too were mesmerized by the beauty of lights. And i know we all had that childhood moment where we almost set our house on fire when we played with the candle fire. Or maybe watch our marshmallow burn in a bonfire at a scouting camp. Especially at night, when the city look like a city of lights or when the Luna shines bright at full moon. Light whether it comes from the sun or any artificial light, not only looks pretty and gives light but more than that, it has its benefits. Click this to know more.

If you checked that out, I know you were surprised at what the last number told you–

Sunlight can cure depression. Sunlight deprivation can cause a condition called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression. It is more common in winter months, but also common in people who work long hours in office buildings, The author says. Many doctors advise patients to undergo ‘Light Therapy’ wherein patients have to expose their selves in sunlight (not too much) or simply open all the lights in their rooms making it look like a ‘sun room’. It may sound hilarious, but that only explains how much our body needs light.

Okay, enough of these MD chatter. But you get the point right? We pretty much can’t live without light. Period. But the reason why I am typing this post instead of making myself ready to go to school is because I wanted to share you an inspiring sermon I heard this first Sunday from our pastor. 🙂

The title of his sermon was “Real Transformation: Examining life in the light of God” and you’ve guessed correctly, it’s about light. But not the light we see in a daily basis, its more than the pretty lights, it is Jesus: The light of the world.

1 John 1:5

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

As our body needs physical light so our soul need spiritual light. As a bulb brings light to a shack so our God brings light into a household. ‘Wait, So you mean God is a bulb?’ Silly, God is like a Light. To make it easier to understand,

evil = darkness; good = light.

In our favorite cartoon shows, it’s either the villain lives in a dark haunted house or he drives a black sports car (except for batman). Or the villain looks scary or wears a black costume (except for batman). But the protagonist always has the sun shining on his back as he flies through the sky as he looks for someone to save (except for batman, he doesn’t fly). But villains always seek for the disadvantage of others.

God is not the superhero we think He is. He is so much revered that WE should be the ones looking for him in our troubled situations. Many people end up poor and desolate or rich and discontented because they have failed to look for the light, which is Christ Jesus.

John 8:12

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

W-w-wait. But why do we even need His Light?

Here is a list based on the sermon why we need God’s light:

L – Light gives life

John 1:14

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Ehow.com says that plants depend on light to produce energy (photosynthesis). Without light a plant is good as dead. Light rays enter the eye through the cornea. The cornea’s refractive power bends the light rays in such a way that they pass freely through the pupil the opening in the center of the iris through which light enters the eye, and that’s how we see. Without light, were just like blind men. In the beginning back when there was nothing but darkness God saw how formless and empty the universe was, so he made the light. And we all know how after that, Adam and Eve were made and the rest was history.  Jesus came as the prophets prophesied, he started teaching and he saw that he was the light, and when he saw the light we have seen his glory as the only begotten Son of God.

I – Inspires

Did you ever try facing a mirror under a ray of the sun and observe how it can bounce to the mirror into any direction you wish. That’s what happens when we absorb God’s light, we will shine forth as a Christian and live a life according to God’s plan and people we see how we have been changed by God’s light and become inspired to live that same life with Jesus.

G – Guides

Psalm 119:105

105 Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.

There are many guides this world has, you can find a guide in a friend, a movie star, or your mom. But what God revealed to us is the guide that never in history failed, always creates a person more worthy for an oscars and leads us to an everlasting life, Jesus.

H – Hope

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

T – Truth

Acts 9:3

As he (Paul) neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.

And we all know how Saul, a Pharisee that hates Christians and Jesus himself that he persecutes every living Christian he encounters that became Paul, a Proud Christian, shared Jesus to unbelievers and made a huge impact on Christianity as a missionary when God flashed a light on him making him blind for a few days until someone prayed for him and his sight was restored in Jesus’ name. Its a tough job for an unbeliever to give up his previous beliefs and plant a Jesus in his heart. But when he saw the light, he knew it was Jesus, and he knew it was the Truth.

But how do we know when we’re walking in God’s light?

1 John 1:6-7

If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Being under God’s Hands must seem pretty enticing. But it’s not easy to achieve. Walking in God’s light isn’t done in a wave of a wand and a ‘bippity-boppity-boo!’ We have to accept Christ, Read the Bible, and retreat from the darkness. And what I mean with darkness,  is an evil life of lust, greed, love of money and more. In other words, we have to live like Christ. You mean the rags and sandals life? No, What I mean is a sinless, selfless, and  holy life. A life more than the pretty lights, A life under the light of the world.

Godspeed brother! 🙂
